Local Activities

hiking

One of the most favoured activities when visiting the area is walking. Northumberland is a walker’s paradise, whether it be along the beaches and coastline or through the Northumberland National Park. There are dozens of identified walks that vary in difficulty and distance across the Northumberland National Park, some of which start on your very door step at Chevy Chase Cottage which is a mere two minute walk from open countryside. St. Cuthbert’s Way which stretches some 62 miles from Melrose in the Scottish borders down to Lindisfarne on the coast passes through the Glendale and bisects Wooler.

WALKING

golfing

golfing

There are over 15 golf courses situated within a 40 minute drive of Chevy Chase Cottage. Wooler has its very own 9 hole golf course (18 tee, 72 par) that provides spectacular views across the Glendale Valley and Cheviot Hills.

Buggies are available for the less energetic and an honesty box operates for all visitors. A set of golf clubs and battery operated golf trolley are stored at Chevy Chase Cottage for use by guests.

Other local golf courses recommended:

Dunstanburgh

is a part links, part parkland course with spectacular views of Dunstanburgh Castle ruins and the coast

Goswick

is another beautiful part links, part
parkland course.

Bamburgh Castle Golf Club

situated on the Northumberland coast with spectacular views of the castle and large expanses of beach.

The Royal Roxburghe at Kelso

was constructed with a view to hosting a future Scottish Open. The course itself sits on the banks of the River Teviot and is a true challenge of golf.
Other courses worthy of a visit in the area include:

Alnmouth

Rothbury

Coldstream

Seahouses

Eyemouth

Linden Hall

There are many differing golf offers available to visitors at selected courses; these include the 2 fore 1 ticket scheme, Freedom of the Fairways, Coastal Golf Classic and the Passport Ticket Scheme available via the tourist information centre.

fishing

Any keen fishermen will be able to find rod fishing on the Wooler Water and the River Till, where sea trout, brown trout and salmon can be caught. Still- water fishing is also available at the Chatton Trout Fishery located four miles from Wooler. Some very large fish have been caught here over recent years.

FISHING

CYCLING

cycling

The roads around the floor of the Glendale Valley make for great cycling as the roads are less congested and many established cycle routes criss- cross the area. For the more energetic the bridle paths that cross the National Park make for great mountain biking. Mountain bikes can be hired locally, telephone: 01668 281316. Chevy Chase Cottage provides 4 bicycles that are fine for riding on the local roads.

horse riding

Horse riding is available at Kimmerston Riding Centre, located only 6 miles from Wooler. The centre provides high quality ponies for all experience levels and ages.

diving

diving

The Farne Islands located off the Northumberland coast at Seahouses, some 16 miles away are well known for their marine life and old wrecks and are popular with both beginners and experienced divers.
